צנוע זה שיק! !Modest is Chic

בימים עברו כאשר שמעו אנשים את המילה צנוע - האסוסיאציה הראשונה שעלתה בראשם הייתה: חנוק, שחור, חם. הלבוש הצנוע היה מוצג כארוך ומסורבל וחסר טעם בעליל... ובעולם הגדול, מי שהייתה חולקת את סגנון הלבוש הזה היתה מלאה, או אחת שלא אוהבת איך שהיא נראית, ומנסה להתחבא תחת שכבות של בגדים.
עולם האופנה בשנות ה90 היה מאופיין בגזרות חצופות חושפות כל חלקה טובה, וקשה היה לנו, כחרדיות, לנבור בהיצע הדל בחנויות הכלליות על מנת להעלות חצאית טובה או איזה סריג מתקבל על הדעת.
בשנים האחרונות יש לאשה החרדית עדנה, בהכנס הגזרות הארוכות - החצאיות והשרוולים, הג'קטים והגרביונים לאופנה
אם תנברו היטב באתרי אופנה ובתצוגות שונות שעולות חדשות לבקרים, תראו - כי הלבוש הצנוע חזר לכותרות. שרוולים הוארכו, מפתח הצוואר עלה למעלה, ברכיים כוסו - וכל זאת בשם האופנה והטעם הטוב. ה"רטרו" וה"וינטאג'" - עשו לנו רק טוב ושנות ה60 שהיו מאופיינות באופנה מוקפדת וצנועה ועם זאת מהודרת ואלגנטית, חזרו ובגדול!

מעצבי על מתחרים זה בזה כדי להציג את השמלה הצנועה באור הזרקורים, וכיום היא סמל לטוב טעם ואופנת על.

In the past, when people heard the word "modest" their first Association was: choking, dark, and stuffy. Modest dress code was viewed as long and clumsy and with no sense of fashion... outside frum circles, in the world at large, people who choose that style were on the heavy side, or simply didn't like the way they looked, and so they tried to hide under layers of clothing.

In the 90's the world of fashion was defined by bold cuts and revealing skin, and it was hard for us, Orthodox Jewish women, to get past the short supply of suitable clothes and manage to dig up a good skirt or a nice top. Lately, the Orthodox community has been rejuvenated with long skirts, sleeves, jackets and tights coming back into fashion. 

If you visit well known fashion sites and look closely at the runways you'll notice that the modest dress code is making the headlines. Full length sleeves, rising necklines, knees covered - and all in the name of fashion and good taste. The "Retro" and the "Vintage" looks did us well, and the 60's fashion, that were characterized by modest yet chic and elegant fashion, have returned in a big way!

Designers are competing with each other to display modest dress in the spotlight, and today it's a symbol of good taste and high fashion.

כאשר אני מנסה לחפש באתרים השונים שמלה אשר תכסה גם את מרפקי, את ברכי ומפתח הצוואר שלה לא מוגזם - עולות בחכתי שמלות מהממות - אך במחירים אסטרונומים - כיון שעדיין השמלות הללו הן אי שם במרומי הסקאלה של מעצבי העל, מדוע לא נוריד אותן אלינו - וננסה לשווק דגמים יפים כאלה במחירים הגיוניים?
כאשר אנו מנסות למדוד את החיקויים שלהן בחנויות כמו זארה ומנגו, תמיד ישנו משהו שאינו מושלם. אם זה במשיכה מתמדת של החצאית כלפי מטה כדי שתכסה את קצה הברך, או בהשלמה של "חצאית בסיס" פריט שאני לא מחבבת כלל וכלל אך בלית ברירה משתמשת בו מידי פעם, להארכת החצאית. או ב"סריג משלים" או "חולצת בסיס" כי אמנם האורך של השמלה טוב, אך היא נעדרת שרוולים או אינה סגורה כראוי באיזור הצוואר.
קשה לומר כי סנדרה בולוק - בחצאית המכסה את הברך+ לא נראית מדהים, צנוע (היא בטוח לא מתביישת בגוף שלה), ושיקי ביותר. מדוע לא נוכל גם אנו ללכת באורך כזה?- בטוחה אני כי בנות רבות ההולכות "בלית ברירה" בחצאיות הקצרות מזו (כולל אותי, לצערי) היו יותר משמחות, להוסיף חצאית כזו (ואף יותר מאחת) למלתחה שלהן.

When I try to search for a dress online, one that will cover the elbows, knees and have a kosher neckline I find lots of stunning dresses. But they're all very expensive because those dresses are somewhere at the top of the scale of the top designers, and my question is, why not bring them down to us? Why can't we have such beautiful designs to market at reasonable prices?

When we try to compare these to imitations in stores like Zara and Mango, there is always something that makes it flawed. Perhaps it's the constant pulling the skirt down to cover the knees, or the need to wear a "base skirt" underneath that I do not like at all, but must use from time to time, to make the dress look longer. Or having to put a top or "base shirt" underneath where, although the length of the dress is nice,  it lacks sleeves or doesn't have a properly closed neckline.

It's hard to say that Sandra Bullock with a skirt that covers the knee and more, does not look amazing, modest (she sure is not ashamed of her figure), and very chic. Why can't we go to that length? I'm sure that many women who have no other choices but short skirts  (including me, unfortunately) would be more than happy to add this skirt (or more that one like it) to their wardrobe.

גם בכיסויי ראש ישנה התעוררות גדולה, בזכות הנסיכה קייט מידלטון אשר מצוותת לכל תלבושת נהדרת כובע תואם, טורבנים - שהיינו מתחלחלים מהם בעבר, מקשטים תצוגות אופנה רבות, ומטפחות מכסות ראשיהן של ידועניות רבות כסמל לאופנה חוזרת אף היא משנות ה60.

There is also a great awakening in the head covering department, thanks to Princess Kate Middleton who teams a beautiful hat with every great outfit she wears.  Turbans that we shuddered from them in the past, now decorate models' heads at many fashion shows and scarves cover the heads of many celebrities as the symbol of "throw back" fashion from the 60's.

תמיד הייתי בדעה כי הלבוש המכסה את הגוף הוא הלבוש היפה ביותר. המסתורין, השארת יתר הגוף לדמיון, הכיסוי מפני נזקי השמש, יופי הבד והגזרה של הבגד, הנשיות והשיק הם רק חלק מהטובות הטמונות ללבוש הצנוע. כעת, כשכל העולם מיישר קו איתנו, והגזרות הצנועות שולטות ברמה, קל לנו יותר למצוא בתוך המגוון עצום של פריטי אופנה גזרות ובגדים לבישים. כל שנותר לנו הוא רק להתאים ולערבב בינהם וליצור אאוטפיטים מושלמים:)

I've always felt that clothing that covers the body is the most beautiful way to dress. Mystery leaves the rest of the body to the imagination, coverage protects against sun damage, fine fabrics and cuts of the garment, and being feminine and chic are some inherent reasons to dress modest. Now, when the rest of the world catches up  to us, and promotes more modest styles, it becomes easier to find suitable dress among all the huge varieties of fashion items and clothing departments. All we have left to do is to just to mix and match them and create the perfect outfits :)
